Portrait or Headshot?
Do I need a portrait or headshot?
We get this question a lot. Headshots are images of your face, generally a plain background and cropped tight to show your face. They are used on social media, directories and email among the most popular places. They are a great business tool in this climate of remote working and learning.
Portraits tell a story. The story they tell is about you. Portraits can be very tight, closeup or wide to include you whole body and the environment you live, work or play. The clothing you wear is part of the story as well. Color, black and white as well as the lighting used is crucial to a successful portrait.
the Environmental Portrait
Portraits can be in the studio or at a location that tells the story you want to tell. In the studio the story is told with clothing and props, keeping the background minimal to reduce distractions.
A portrait on location such as a work of play environment is a perfect setting to add personality to the environmental portrait.
Portrait Details
Many people run out and buy new clothing, get a haircut and insist on loosing a few pounds before getting a portrait. Although doing these things in preparation is common, it's not necessary to have a beautiful portrait.
Looking your best is always desirable but looking like your self in the environment you thrive is believable and beautiful.
Portraits don't have to be traditional, stiff looking or boring. They can be as modern as you are.
